Near miss with OPP cruiser leads to impaired driving charges

SOUTH PORCUPINE - One person has been charged following a near miss collision with a police cruiser.

On Dec. 16, 2023 shortly before 9:30 p.m., a member of the South Porcupine Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was travelling on Theriault Boulevard in Timmins when they were almost struck by an oncoming vehicle.

The driver was stopped, and it was determined they had consumed alcoholic beverages. They were transported to detachment for further testing. The investigation revealed the driver's blood alcohol concentration was over three times the legal limit.

As a result, a 38-year-old from Timmins was arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol or drugs
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The OPP remains committed to taking alcohol/drug-impaired drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education.
