ATTAWAPISKAT - A search warrant in a remote First Nation led to the seizure of more than $35,000 in drugs.
As part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) says a search warrant was executed on Jan. 10 at an Attawapiskat First Nation residence.
Suspected methamphetamine pills, crystal methamphetamine, cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia were seized. Two people in the home at the time were arrested without incident, said NAPS. The estimated street value of drugs seized is over $35,000.
A 44-year-old man and 76-year-old woman both from Attawapiskat are each charged with possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of crystal methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The 76-year-old was released from police custody with conditions and a future court date. The man was held for a bail hearing on Jan. 11 and held in police custody with a future court date.
For the investigation, NAPS had help from other police services, including members of the OPP and the Timmins Police Service's drug enforcement unit.
None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
