SUDBURY - Two people have been arrested for attempted murder after what police say was a “targeted” shooting in the self-checkout area of the Notre Dame Avenue Food Basics Halloween night.
Greater Sudbury Police say that shortly before 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31, officers were dispatched to a grocery store on Notre Dame Avenue in relation to a weapons complaint.
Police were told two individuals approached a man in the self-checkout, where one of the individuals shot the man.
The suspects as well as the man who was shot fled the grocery store.
The gunshot victim, a 31-year-old man, later went to the hospital and was treated for serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
When officers arrived on scene, they located one of the individuals believed to be involved in the incident. The individual was taken into custody and charged, but it was determined that the individual was not the shooter.
Based on information obtained through the investigation, officers visited a residence on Baker Street. Upon arrival at the residence, officers saw an individual matching the description of the shooter outside.
The suspect fled on foot and was located by K9 Roy and his handler. Officers also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident.
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the following offences:
- Attempted murder
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Pointing a firearm
- Discharging a firearm with intent
- Careless use of a firearm
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Breach of release order
- Possession of a prohibited firearm
The 17-year-old was held in police custody overnight and will attend bail court today, Nov. 1, to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The second suspect, a 22-year-old man has been charged with the following offences:
- Attempted murder
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Obstruct police
The 22-year-old suspect was held in custody overnight and will attend bail court Nov. 1 to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
Greater Sudbury Police say this was a targeted incident, as the individuals involved are believed to be known to each other.
Police say they’d like to acknowledge and commend their officers and members of the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Centre for their quick and coordinated response to a high-risk situation where two dangerous and violent offenders were arrested and charged.
